Silk Art Imports

Arts Preservation is presently working with silk artists in the Chinese city of Suzhou to bring their art form more visible recognition in the United States. Silk Art forms in China date back to the early 1600’s. The technique is to use a needle to thorn on the silk with various kinds of string. The art form is passed from generation to generation and is not reinforced by trade schools or other methods of public education. Another Chinese traditional art form is Straw Patchwork. This is an ancient folk-art tradition originally found in the Sui Dynasty.  The process involves soaking wheat straw and then after allowing the straw to smolder, it is steamed and bleached.  An enchanting variety of colors are produced by ironing the processed straw. The straw is then cut and woven with the same intricacy of the traditional Silk Art.
